Susana Canales Barrón is a multimedia journalist and visual artist whose work explores the intersections of memory, migration, and place. Shaped by the convergence of her ancestral roots in Zacatecas, Mexico, and her American upbringing, she traces the relationship between personal experience and collective history, bringing greater visibility to stories that challenge dominant narratives.
Her films have screened at the San Francisco International Airport Museum and the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, among other venues. Her experimental short workers at night was acquired into the permanent collection of the City and County of San Francisco.
In recognition of her contributions to storytelling and public discourse, Canales Barrón received the Ruben Salazar Award in 2026 for advancing Latino representation through journalism and earned two Southern California Journalism Award nominations for excellence in social media reporting. She holds a B.A. in Cinema and Digital Media from the University of California, Davis, where she graduated summa cum laude, and an M.F.A. in Documentary Film from Stanford University.
